Holistic Care

What is Holistic Care?

Holistic is a Greek word meaning “related to the whole”. Stewart believes that successful diagnosis & treatment of the teeth and their supporting structures requires a wider, holistic consideration of the health, well-being & environment of the patient.

Stewart first became interested in an alternative approach to dentistry after attending a lecture by Harold Gelb (one of the founding fathers of TMJ treatment). This led to a journey of discovery that has allowed him to meet the world’s foremost practitioners and clinicians in disciplines such as TMJ treatment, orthodontics, orthopaedics, applied kinesiology, homeopathy, CranioSacral therapy, and visceral manipulation.

Field Control Therapy

Field Control Therapy (FCT) is a system of medicine developed in the 1990s by New York cardiologist Dr Yurkovsky. It uses a combination of bio-resonance, applied kinesiology and homeopathic techniques to interrogate the body for accumulated toxins. The body takes in energy in the form of food, water and air, utilises the parts we need and excretes what we do not need. When toxins that we do not need (such as heavy metals, toxic chemicals and antibiotic residues) accumulate in the body because they are not fully excreted, physical ailments can develop and worsen over time in their complexity and severity.

Homotoxicology (a healing system developed in Germany in the 1950s by Dr Reckweg) forms a key part of FCT and works to restore health by reversing the process of toxin accumulation. Click here to read more about Field Control Therapy.

Homeopathy

Homeopathic remedies mimic the disease symptoms and in so doing stimulate the body's own ability to heal itself. They are very safe to use in that there are no toxic side effects. In dental care, specific homeopathic remedies can be used to relieve anxiety in phobic patients; reduce swelling and pain; and replace antibiotics.

Bach Flower Remedies

The medical researches of Dr Edward Bach (1886-1936) led him to conclude that ill-health does not necessarily originate in the physical body, but can be caused by our emotional or mental state. Dr Bach identified a number of remedy states with positive and negative aspects. He believed that the negative states were the true cause of ill health. The remedies he developed from flower essences embody the positive state and their natural vibrations help to restore balance and health.

Kinesiology

Kinesiology is a holistic health care method which uses gentle muscle testing to evaluate bodily functions. Kinesiology uses muscle testing to check the integrity of the various parts of the mind / body system. Therapy is applied and then muscles are re-tested to check that re-balancing has occurred.

CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive, manipulative technique which involves testing for movement in various parts of the body. The main focus of the treatment is around the cranium and vertebral column. Because it acts on the deepest structures and organs of the nervous system, CranioSacral Therapy influences motor, pain and co-ordination mechanisms, the digestive system, the respiratory system, heart function and the endocrine system. The bite and temporo-mandibular joints (TMJ) can not only profoundly influence the craniosacral system, but can themselves be rendered dysfunctional by restrictions and imbalance anywhere in the body, with myriad health consequences.

To the enormous benefit of patients with TMJ related problems, dentists are increasingly learning about the craniosacral approach, and working with CranioSacral Therapists to resolve bite-related issues.CranioSacral Therapy enhances the body's natural healing processes and has been effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

- Migraine headaches, Traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries
- Chronic neck and back pain
- Emotional difficulties
- Motor co-ordination difficulties
- Stress and tension-related problems
- Central nervous system disorders
- Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ)
- Orthopaedic problems
- Chronic fatigue
- Neurovascular or immune disorders
- Scoliosis
- Infantile disorders
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Autism
- Learning disabilities
- Fibromyalgia and other connective tissue disorders.

Visceral Manipulation

Visceral Manipulation (VM), which was developed by French osteopath and physiotherapist Jean-Pierre Barral, is a gentle manual therapy which enhances the mobility and tissue motion of the organs of the visceral system. The techniques used can alter and improve the entire body by enhancing the structure of the organs and the systems they function within. By encouraging the normal, healthy mobility of the viscera and their connective tissues, the specific manual techniques used can help the body maintain its natural health.
